It's a gripping, first-person account of the life of one of Nigeria's most visible and influential politicians; in the last four decades. Written in simply-worded English, the autobiography is an interesting narration of the early life, career and political struggles of the author, spanning a period of over six decades. Apparently, his involvement, in a lot of the political issues that dominated the Nigerian landscape, from the dying days of military rule, to the onset of the Fourth Republic, have been understated over the years. In this book, we learn about the monumental contributions he made towards ending military rule, especially in the aftermath of the June 12th annulment, and the pivotal role he played towards moving the country forward; in a bid to reinstate democracy in the country. Alhaji Sule Lamido's fearless encounters, with former Nigerian leaders, both military and civilian, showed the courage and confidence he is endowed with by nature. I consider this book an insider's account of the intrigues, the power-tussles and the controversies that shaped our politics, since the beginning of our Second Republic to date. I recommend it to all who wish to know about the extraordinary life of this former minister and governor, a politician of the radical school of NEPU and PRP ideals. It is also a compendium on the history of Nigerian politics, as seen through the eyes of a participant. From early life in rural Bamaina to school life at Barewa College, to career pursuits in Lagos, and to participation in politics, we are taken through the captivating, and often humourous life experiences of the author. It is a book that will be greatly enjoyed by the reader, it will also inspire those who wish to know, practice and advocate good governance, at any level, in Nigeria.

Sule Lamido is, without doubt, a formidable figure in politics. He was one of the vibrant young people of the PRP during the Second Republic who got elected in to the House of Representatives and later rose to become the National Secretary of the SDP in the botched Third Republic. He was part of the team that midwifed the historic primaries which led to the acclaimed June 12 mandate of MKO Abiola—long before the rest of the country truly grasped its significance. Lamido was among the original 18 democrats who boldly challenged military rule, forming the G-34 movement that ultimately gave birth to the PDP in 1998. His political path saw him serve as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as the third elected governor of Jigawa State—a role in which many consider him the most impactful in the state to date. What continues to impress me about Lamido is his experience, his longevity in the game, his audacity, and his steadfast commitment to democratic ideals. While I’ve often disagreed with him—particularly his tendency to cling to the past—I still regard him as one of the most admirable political leaders of his generation. He launched his autobiography today, and I look forward to reading it.
